heya! i've seen the Larousse gastronomique before at the library, it's definitly on my "will buy eventually" list!

PS, for language learning, have you heard of http://www.euronews.net/ ? It's got videos about current events in several different languages as well as transcripts to go with them. So they are short, and you can jump to the same video, in a different language, to test your comprehension!
