Methods are for rubes... You've correctly ...Hi

Methods are for rubes... You've correctly spotted one element that helps convert incomprehensible into comprehensible. TV images and text help, as do the cognates. As a kid, I watched Italian TV because of Lamu and Ken (Ken le Survivant for French speakers). I couldn't care less about the language. The language kind of snuck up on me. As a teenager, I could find Dragon Ball Z during most of the year only on German channels. I also liked "Georgie," Die Königin der tausend Jahre, Robin Hood,Grimms Märchen, movies etc.

Audiobooks and podcasts would work well with cognate languages. However, kids want to have fun and kids from information-rich countries can find all they need in their mother tongue. I am not sure they could be coaxed into language learning experiments through radio shows and podcasts.Reinekehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07698980784691138039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-76524031762313884102016-09-21T02:07:53.852-07:002016-09-21T02:07:53.852-07:00I have CEFR C1 in French, B2 in German, and A2 in ...I have CEFR C1 in French, B2 in German, and A2 in Dutch and Italian. I am currently enrolled in an Open University B.A. programme in Language Studies, majoring in French and German, with a minor in Italian. Now you will expect me to condemn the author of the original article, but in fact I agree with him. If you are an English speaker, unless you either need to learn a particular language, or you simply enjoy languages, it is indeed a waste of time. You can manage perfectly well with only English. My maternal grandfather was a good linguist, but he had to be, because he was a Bulgarian and he needed to learn other languages to live outside Bulgaria.Alan Fiskhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05516320333001972924noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-74118527828895559202016-07-16T14:32:43.040-07:002016-07-16T14:32:43.040-07:00Hi,

Re-learning a language can quickly lead to what you call "overlearning," which is a waste of time - and precious energy. I can well imagine when you overlearn a language (spend too much time reviewing the basic grammar and basic vocabulary), your brain shuts down in complete boredom. Re-learning a language is an art in itself! Good thoughts, great blog! After all, it is only by living in a country that you can ever become fully proficient.

No doubt many of these Chinese are or will in the future work in roles helping to bridge the language divide in the business world. Maybe China needs to facilitate some of these Western educated Chinese moving back to work for Chinese companies.

To do so, would need to overcome local vested interests and the culture of guanxi in job placements.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-19373364741613282762011-04-13T21:03:17.520-07:002011-04-13T21:03:17.520-07:00I have just read this article and could not wait t...I have just read this article and could not wait to praise the authors lavishly. This is an excellent piece, because:

It has dispelled the myth of the superiority of the monolingual dictionary method with such clarity and confidence.

I have learnt several languages and taught some. I suffered from this Mono vs Bilingual dilemma for quite some time, wavering between the tradition (MLD) and the truth (BLD).

Finally, I am now relieved as I have got the necessary support for my learning experience and understanding, which is:

we learn words easily by association, not through definition, as correctly pointed out by the authors.

Qudrate Khoda
Montreal, CanadaUnknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18153602041282973282noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-80166487077800467082011-02-25T13:52:39.492-08:002011-02-25T13:52:39.492-08:00Without a doubt being bilingual is a great advanta...Without a doubt being bilingual is a great advantage and wonderful tool. If you use broader criteria than "feature film" you would find that even India's numbers don't look very impressive when compared to some other countries.

For this particular purpose I would consider only "real" movies. I'd also look at TV production separately. Mexico scores rather high in UNESCO yearly averages for some of the past decades for "real" movie production. Philippines had an explosion of moviemaking in the past, followed by a trickle. Russia scored very high for decades, but 1990's were terrible.Reinekehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07698980784691138039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-15375174370447342852010-12-30T23:18:50.739-08:002010-12-30T23:18:50.739-08:00I noticed another mistake on that chart: Nigeria s...I noticed another mistake on that chart: Nigeria should be right at the top, possibly at number one. The output of the Nigerian film industry, known as Nollywood, is estimated at a thousand movies a year. These are all released on DVD rather than theaters and for this reason are derided as not being "real" movies, much like the Mexican videohomes.Marco González Ambrizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10440348867067993240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-38893097654130151952010-12-30T23:15:37.402-08:002010-12-30T23:15:37.402-08:00I don't know about the other countries but the...I don't know about the other countries but the data for Mexico is all wrong. Since the early 90s the number of Mexican movies reached an all-time high, about 300 or 400 a year. No one knows for sure how many because most of them are straight-to-video releases, known here as "videohomes". Because Mexican researchers don't consider them "real" movies they go uncounted, and since no one (but me!) bothers to review them it can be almost impossible to tell how many are being made each year. Directors I've interviewed say the number has decreased recently because of increased competition from the U.S. but there are still hundreds of videohomes being released.Marco González Ambrizhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10440348867067993240noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-77227240880941912012010-10-27T23:18:13.122-07:002010-10-27T23:18:13.122-07:00Hi Reineke, unrelated to this post, but in the spi...Hi Reineke, unrelated to this post, but in the spirit of your blog: you may want to check out the 11 articles on word learning: http://rstb.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/364/1536.toc

I couldn't find references on your blog, but some of the findings are very interesting.Bakuninhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18178303559512162260noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-17775901799818461552010-10-22T11:11:15.068-07:002010-10-22T11:11:15.068-07:00My heart goes out to those who are experiencing pr...My heart goes out to those who are experiencing prejudice because of their foreign accents!

I've encountered similar issues during my life in an English speaking country.
