Er, no,...//Come on admit it, you're jealous.//

Er, no, not my field at all, why would I be jealous.

As for "milking", heck, people milk the system while saying nonsense, and he is actually making sense.

My point is that it is sad that such obviously useful techniques for language learning, techniques that actually work, are not used widely enough. Come on, my daughter is taking French at school, I know what I am talking about. :)frenkeldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18115187417587333532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-59341296045283308632010-03-27T20:04:04.313-07:002010-03-27T20:04:04.313-07:00Krashen stating something that's so painfully ...Krashen stating something that's so painfully obvious no one ever thought articulating it in the first place, putting a cool name on it, calling it research and milking it? No! Come on admit it, you're jealous. You see, he chose something that is relevant to the general public, namely education, even controversial (bilingual education) his theories make perfect sense, they're as common sense as your grandma's advice not to put anything larger than your elbow in your ear canal, they're difficult to disprove, and just look at all those catchy names! Language acquisition, the silent period....

Since this all ultimately deals with ze brain and that's certainly more mysterious than the dark side of the moon he'll be milking it practically forever. The man's a genius. Just like Michel Thomas. A man among pygmies.Reinekehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07698980784691138039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-19710879785419239152010-03-27T12:39:27.699-07:002010-03-27T12:39:27.699-07:00The best thing I ever did for my German skills was...The best thing I ever did for my German skills was to order the entire series of Star Trek: Deep Space 9 (dubbed in German), and watch all ~180 episodes from start to finish over a series of months. Similarly for the Harry Potter books in German, combined with their German audiobook formats.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-5039536636204086392010-03-27T11:33:40.763-07:002010-03-27T11:33:40.763-07:00I was probably not very clear. The point is, what ...I was probably not very clear. The point is, what Krashen says here is exactly what I discovered on my own early on.

A long novel is easier to read than a collection of short stories. Chick lit (and other kinds of trash lit) rocks for language learning. Several novels by the same author is a bit easier than novels by different authors, although with novels being long as it is, the effect isn't acute. Etc, etc.

The fact that this needs to be somehow explained simply shows what a sad state language instruction must be in. It's almost as if the teachers don't see their role as facilitators of activities that lead to automatic skill acquisition, but insist on "adding value" by making a mess of the learning process for their students.

On the other hand, one shouldn't forget that there is more than one way to learn a language, so Krashen may not be entirely innocent himself.frenkeldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18115187417587333532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-15184987413552105582010-03-27T10:39:58.480-07:002010-03-27T10:39:58.480-07:00Uh, I can think of several persons... but I believ...Uh, I can think of several persons... but I believe you understand my point.Reinekehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07698980784691138039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-72642034597865006152010-03-27T10:29:56.013-07:002010-03-27T10:29:56.013-07:00Would you launch a rocket with a person inside bas...Would you launch a rocket with a person inside based on commonsense, unresearched ideas?Reinekehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07698980784691138039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5818332935611072344.post-36033667383937989692010-03-27T10:02:12.551-07:002010-03-27T10:02:12.551-07:00It never ceases to amaze and entertain how the mos...It never ceases to amaze and entertain how the most commonsense ideas require "research" by academics.

Perhaps it's because language teachers have brought every conceivable counter-productive idea into their teaching, so now it has to be undone.frenkeldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18115187417587333532noreply@blogger.com
